Darren Ferguson to stick by under-fire Peterborough United ‘keeper

Speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph, Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson has said that he will be sticking by ‘keeper Christy Pym for their game against Lincoln City, as criticism of the summer signing continued after another error against Wycombe Wanderers.

In Peterborough United’s 3-3 draw against Wycombe Wanderers at the weekend, goalkeeper Christy Pym could have done better for the first goal, with an Adebayo Akinfenwa header getting past the ‘keeper to set the Chairboys on their way for their eventual comeback.

It is not the first time Pym has made an error this season, having let a simple shot through him in a 3-2 win against AFC Wimbledon. His errors have seen some calls from Posh fans for either Aaron Chapman or Conor O’Malley to come into the side, but manager Darren Ferguson has insisted he will be sticking by the former Exeter City man, saying he will “certainly” play against Lincoln City.

Ferguson said:

“I certainly haven’t lost confidence in Christy. He is a very good goalkeeper who has made a couple of mistakes recently. I did tell him I thought he should have saved the first goal at Wycombe, but he wasn’t helped by a defence that sat too deep and who then failed to win a header from a set-piece.

“But Christy has also kept six clean sheets this season which is a very good record. What we must do better is protect him better especially in the situation we found ourselves in on Saturday when we kept letting high balls come into our penalty area. Christy knows he needs to cut the mistakes out and he will. He will certainly play against Lincoln.”
